A Visit to the Palace of Versailles: French Royal History and Marie Antoinette

The Palace of Versailles, located just outside Paris, is one of France's most iconic historical landmarks and a must-see destination. On a recent visit, I had the opportunity to tour this opulent former royal residence, including the famous Hall of Mirrors. The highlight of the experience was learning about the life of Marie Antoinette, the ill-fated last queen of France before the French Revolution.

To make the most of your visit, I recommend going in the morning when the palace first opens. This will help you avoid some of the heaviest crowds later in the day. For the full Versailles experience, opt for a full-day tour that includes not just the main palace but also the sprawling grounds and gardens.

The Hall of Mirrors is the centerpiece of the palace and will take your breath away with its lavish decor and sparkling chandeliers. Our guide shared fascinating stories about the French royal court and how this hall was used for important ceremonies and events. Imagining the kings, queens, and courtiers strolling through this ornate space really brings history to life.

After touring the main palace, we explored the gardens, admiring the geometrically laid out flower beds, artistic fountains, and placid canals. Did you know there are over 1,400 fountains on the property? We also visited the Petit Trianon and Hameau de la Reine, Marie Antoinette's hideaway estate nestled far out on the grounds. Here we learned intimate details about her life, hobbies, and how she used this retreat to escape the formality and pressures of court life. Walking through the cozy rooms and quaint gardens, you get a sense of Marie Antoinette's private world that contrasts with her public persona.

I booked my full-day tour through Get Your Guide, which I highly recommend. As an American Express member, I received 10% off! Feel free to use the links below to check out their Versailles tour options and book your own historical French adventure.

As France prepares for the upcoming Olympics, the palace and its grounds are being cleaned and refreshed, making it an even more stunning destination. Plus, with the Equestrian Games set to be held at Versailles during the Olympics, there's an extra air of excitement and anticipation.

Let me know if you have any other questions as you plan your trip! Exploring Versailles and diving into the story of Marie Antoinette was an unforgettable experience that I'm sure you will love.
